The Icelandic breed is one of the worlds purest sheep breeds developing in isolation after Vikings settled Iceland between 870 and 930 CE. The fleece has an inner and outer coat (the fine undercoat being pronounced Thel and the long, coarser outercoat called Tog). The thel is springy, lustrous and soft. The longer tog coat is similar to mohair, wavy or corkscrewed rather than crimped. The natural colours vary from snow white through several shades of grey to pitch black. Some sheep will also show mouflon, badgerface patterns with several combinations of colour and patterns.
